The newlywed’s to-do list

So the big day’s over and you’re back refreshed and relaxed from your honeymoon.

What’s on next on your to-do list? Here are some of them:

  • Have your wedding dress dry-cleaned. The sooner, the better! Make sure you take it to the cleaners who specialize in wedding dresses (they use the right solvents there).

  • If you are changing your last name, you will need to update your IDs, passport , social security card and credit cards.

  • Update your tax status. Decide if you and your partner are going to file together or separately. You can consult an accountant for some advice about this. Oh, and you must do this ASAP.

  • Send you thank-you notes within two months after your wedding. Do it together to save just one of you the suffering from carpal tunnel.

  • Moving in to a new home? Inform your immediate family and friends about your new address.

  • Received duplicate wedding gifts? Decide what to do with them right away. If you are going to exchange them, contact the store about their return and exchange policies.

  • Meet your with your photographer/videographer to  come up with a final selection of wedding photos for your album and a final edit for your wedding video. Don’t put this off too long. Your contract might state that you have just 6 months or a year to select the images and edit the video footage.

  • Talk about your finances (you probably should have done this before the wedding!)  If you opt to merge your accounts, you will need to go to the bank and complete the necessary paperwork.

  • Most newlyweds include their spouses as beneficiaries. In this case, you will need to update your life and insurance documents. You can call your company’s HR or your insurance company for these forms.
